Greatwood grads honoured by Jilly Cooper OBE

Jilly Cooper,OBE, renowned for her bestselling novels Riders, Polo and her most recent book Jump as well as her for love for horses, was at Greatwood Charity today presenting seventeen students with their OCN certificate’s who have successfully completed the Horse Power program. A total of 48 children with Special Education Needs (SEN) from the Wiltshire area have successfully passed through Greatwood’s recognised Horse Power Program this year.

The students, from Springfields Calne, Hardenhuish Chippenham, Downlands Devizes and Pewsey Vale Schools have successfully completed the Greatwood written Horse Power programme ‘Developing Skills through Working with Animals’. As part of the programme, the students work with former racehorses at Greatwood, who cannot be re-homed generally due to old age or career ending injuries for riding purposes, as well as other inmates belonging to the charity, including shetland ponies, goats, sheep, chicken’s and geese helping develop social skills and managing their own relationships.

Commenting on the presentations, Jilly said “Horses and animals provide a fantastic foundation to help encourage children to interact on so many levels. Greatwood’s Horse Power program offers students who have varying challenges within their lives, with education and career opportunities, which would not have occurred without taking this fantastic and worthwhile course”.

Horse Power is a life skills and emotional literacy programme, developed at Greatwood for children with special educational needs (SEN). The programme provides the opportunity to explore caring for horses, learning about trust, kindness and respect while at the same time applying the same considerations to learning how to care for themselves and their own relationships. For many students this is the starting point in a career with animals and can lead to further education opportunities to study animal and equine care.
