Rider / Groom

Full Time - 5.5 days per week

A new and exciting opportunity has become available for a motivated and hardworking person to join the riding team here at Greatwood in beautiful Marlborough.

The successful candidate will be joining a great team and be working in a professional, top former racehorse yard, you will have the chance to make some new friends and also be challenged to meet your own personal career goals.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Caring for all the horses and animals at Greatwood.
  • Keeping the stables, stable yard and equipment clean and tidy.
  • Ensuring that the yard is a safe clean area for teachers and students.
  • Working closely within the equestrian team retraining the former racehorses in preparation for rehoming.
  • Liaising with potential carers and the requirements associated with rehoming a Greatwood horse.

This role is extremely varied and can be hard work with long hours, including weekends. The Rider/Groom should:

  • have excellent horse management and care skills being able to handle horses quietly, confidently, kindly, competently and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • be organised and able to behave in a professional manner.
  • be able to work within a team.
  • be articulate with good communication skills in order to represent Greatwood appropriately.
  • be physically fit, happy to work hard and reliable.
  • be flexible and able to respond to rapidly changing priorities.

Yard and Maintenance Person

You will be responsible for the general good maintenance of farm buildings and fields, to include fencing, painting, repairing, gardening. Maintenance of machinery.

Duties include:


  • Preparing stables for use.
  • Winter help for mucking out. Using quad bike, yard sweeper and tractor.
  • Spring clean of stables after winter use.
  • Repairing if required.
  • Cleaning out water drinkers.
  • Refix drinkers and lagging if required.
  • Changing light bulbs.


  • Keeping feeding equipment and buckets clean.
  • Filling water buckets and giving foliage.
  • Occasional help with leading out and holding horses (under supervision to begin with.)

General Maintenance Of Farm:

  • Repairing and painting stables and farm buildings.
  • Fencing.
  • To be in charge of all machinery, keeping in good working order, ensuring service records are kept up to date.
  • Keep generator and pump in good working order.
  • To keep clean and tidy tool shed.
  • Repair equipment as needed.
  • Helping with new building projects.

Environment care:

  • Light maintenance including: Sweeping and hosing down the yard to keep it clean, washing, painting fences and walls.
  • Field maintenance including: seeking and digging out ragwort, cleaning out water troughs, picking up dung. Hanging gates etc.
  • Clearing drains and guttering.
  • Strimming, mowing, gardening.
  • Care of small animals and housing.

Assisting visitors:

  • Making sure Farm is tidy when visitors arrive.
  • Helping with group visits.

Fund Raising for Greatwood:

  • Working towards the farm being spick and span for Horse Show and other events.
  • Undertaking bucket collections, administrative tasks or stewarding or other activities as required at fund raising events.
  • Work with the team on visits from media including TV and newspapers.

Skills Required:

This role can be hard work with long hours, including weekends. It is often muddy, wet and cold, and the work involves a lot of lifting and carrying. Therefore as well as loving animals you should be:

  • physically fit, happy to work hard and reliable
  • aware of health and safety
  • happy to take orders
  • have basic maintenance and care skills
  • be able to work within a team
  • be kind and polite and welcoming to visitors
  • be able to drive a tractor
  • undertake duties in a confident and responsible manner
  • be ultimately responsible to Managing Director Helen Yeadon
