Cheltenham Racecourse announced today that the valuable handicap hurdle on The Open Sunday, November 18, 2012, will be run under a different name this year as the 11-year association with Greatwood, the retired racehorse welfare charity, has ended. The Greatwood Handicap Hurdle was sponsored on behalf of the charity by Nigel Bunter, owner of the Barbury Castle Estate, which is home to the Barbury Castle Horse Trials and to the stables of leading Jumps trainer Alan King. Forest of Dean Half MarathonForest of Dean Half Marathon
On Sunday 1st April Danny Anholt (Director of Riding), Sue Jones (Stable Manager),Jo Roper (Instructor), Camilla Jackson (Head groom) and grooms – Flora Rigby & Laurel Cooke all took part in the Forest of Deane Half marathon raising money on behalf of Greatwood.  They all completed the 13.3 miles in times of – Camilla 1.46:28, Danny 1.51:17, Sue 1.54:41, Jo 2.12:16, Laurel 2.06:11 & Flora 2.09:35 and are on track to raise their target of £1000. First time half marathon runner Flora said ‘ It was a brilliant experience, the first of many to come. I hope the money we raised will make a difference at Greatwood’. All the runners had a wonderful day and we at Millfield are very proud of their efforts.

On January 25th 2012 Greatwood Charity celebrated a decade in Wiltshire. During this time the charity has rehabilitated and re-homed hundreds of former racehorses as well as helped over 2000 children with special education needs (SEN) within the region, enabling many to follow a career with horses. First time half marathon runner Flora said ‘ It was a brilliant experience, the first of many to come. I hope the money we raised will make a difference at Greatwood’. All the runners had a wonderful day and we at Millfield are very proud of their efforts.

Jilly Cooper,OBE, renowned for her bestselling novels Riders, Polo and her most recent book Jump as well as her for love for horses, was at Greatwood Charity today presenting seventeen students with their OCN certificate’s who have successfully completed the Horse Power program. A total of 48 children with Special Education Needs (SEN) from the Wiltshire area have successfully passed through Greatwood’s recognised Horse Power Program this year. Read more ..

We were recently asked if we could help this horse by finding him a good, safe and secure home. He had been at livery nearby and was greatly loved and looked after but his owner wanted to feel that he could have a second career after racing. We looked up his form and were astounded! We have only ever come across one horse that could even try to measure up to his number of runs, and that was Montendre (another Greatwood horse) with 104. Read more ..

Chris Vine became familiar with Greatwood Charity at the Newbury Race Day some years ago. Having been a keen racing enthusiast for over 30 years, Chris was always aware of the many horses that leave racing every year, and that some can fall upon hard times. For this reason, back in 2009, Chris decided to become a ‘Friend’ of Greatwood’ to support their efforts in racehorse welfare. Read more ..
