Greatwood

Autumn has arrived and that means it’s time to harvest nature’s fruits. With this term’s topic all
about woodlands, our group from Uplands School in Swindon found themselves delving deep into
the hedgerows picking cups full of blackberries on a very sunny and warm September day.
But how did they know what a bramble looked like? Having identified key features of the bramble
in the classroom, the group set off on a walk, hunting out the blackberries that were hidden deep
in the undergrowth. There were some star spotters and lots of blackberries were soon spotted
and the cups began to fill. I think one or two may have found their way into the hungry mouths of
the foragers along the way, but that’s always a plus side of foraging for your own food!
A big well done to all of our foragers from Uplands School. You avoided the sharp thorns of the
bramble and managed to spot lots of blackberries to help make your smoothies. The smoothies
were certainly a nice treat after a tiring morning picking the fruits. For some of you, hunting for
blackberries was a first, perhaps now it has inspired you to look for more around your home?
